Its present appearance is the result of a long development. Old, preserved animal houses and facilities such as the Moorish-style elephant house built in 1863 or the monkey cliffs of 1914 and new facilities such as the rainforest or elephant park opened in the new millennium show the development of zoological gardens from the menagerie to the nature conservation center.

In the various enclosures and aquariums, the animals are presented to the visitors in an environment adapted to their natural habitat. In the rainforest on 2,000 square meters a true piece of Southeast Asian tropical forest was modeled, with free-flying birds, fruit bats, reptiles and a variety of tropical plants. In the new elephant park, up to 20 elephants can live and reproduce in their natural social bond.In addition to the "classic" visit to the zoo Cologne zoo offers a variety of offers. Guided tours for groups, children or school classes can be used by a zoo guide to learn about the animals' way of life, their attitude in the zoo and their threat in the wild. There are regular lectures during the winter months. The zoo school, which has existed since 1964, supports lessons at schools - here, zoo school teachers teach in the presence of a subject or class teacher. For children, for example, the tent nights or the observation and puzzle games as well as mach-with-actions during the holidays are exciting. The "Summer Night in Zoo and Flora" as well as the "Family Days" inspire young and old alike.
