Rastede PalaceThe origins of the palace lie in a country house that was rebuilt after 1788 for Detlef Hans Graf von Schmettau. Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig acquired the building in 1822 in order to convert it into an Hereditary Prince's Palace.
Embedded in a small park in the style of an English landscape garden, the palace is located opposite Rastede Castle. The ensemble, which includes a number of outbuildings and the surrounding palace garden, is one of the most important cultural monuments in the Oldenburger Land and in this respect is also one of the most representative buildings in the Ammerland district.
After the Second World War, Canadian soldiers and then displaced persons from eastern Germany were housed in the palace. The main and auxiliary buildings were later rented out. Since the 1970s, the municipality of Rastede has leased the palace and, in the further course, more and more parts of the surrounding area.
