At the Rialto markets in Venice, ornately arranged fruits and vegetables, freshly caught fish and seafood seduce the market stalls seductively. Since the Middle Ages, the buzzing hustle and bustle of the Rialto market, Mercato di Rialto, is inseparable from Venice.
Already in the year 1097 the market was held here in the district of San Polo. Even today, the fresh produce is transported in the early morning hours across the majestic Grand Canal to the Rialto markets.
Freshly caught fish at Rialto Market
The fish market of Venice, the Pescheria, is one of the most beautiful in the world - see for yourself!
Since 1907 it takes place in the neo-gothic market hall built especially for this purpose. Embedded on ice here is everything from eels to tuna to seafood.
Crunchy fruits and vegetables in Venice
What is sold on the Rialtomärkten depends on the seasons. And many of the fresh produce comes from the vegetable island of Sant Erasmo in the northern lagoon of Venice. Try the salad, asparagus, fennel, beans and artichokes that thrive there.
