Bike Touring Highlight
In Hamburg's city area there is only one surviving castle - in the heart of Bergedorf. After a long history today is a museum in the venerable building.
The Bergedorf Castle is a four-winged complex. It houses a museum and a café and can also be hired for weddings.
Documentary mention of the castle as a "solid house" first in the 14th century, but more detailed information about it can not be found in the sources. It may also have been built at the beginning of the 13th century as a protective device on the Bille. Also, the appearance of the early castle is not proven and based solely on speculation. A model of how the castle complex originally looked might be located in the interior of the castle.
