The border fortifications of Switzerland were military lines of defense of the Swiss army for the protection of independence  in the sense of armed neutrality and the Hague neutrality agreement. In view of the rapid development of military technology, the Swiss government decided to supplement or strengthen the border fortifications during the Second World War with staggered defensive lines (advanced positions, Limmat position) and the Reduit.
