University Church or Collegiate Church - First plans to build a university church summed up prince-archbishop Paris Lodron, when he founded in 1623 the Benedictine University in Salzburg. However, the final construction took a long time to come. At that time professors and students had only one hall, the Aula academica, available to hold services. Theatrical performances and other festivities were also held in this hall.It was not until 1694, more than 70 years later, that Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun decided to build his own large church for the university. As master builder, the archbishop chose the most important baroque architect of the time, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. With the construction of the university church Fischer von Erlach created his most important work. The most monumental sacral structure after the cathedral, which with its magnificent facade is one of the most magnificent Baroque churches in Austria, influenced the late Baroque church architecture in southern Germany by its stylistic peculiarity sustainable.Source: salzburg.info/de/sehenswertes/kirchen-friedhoefe/kollegienkirche

An impressively simple looking church with lots of white stucco work and golden details. Art exhibitions and performances are also held here. Entry to the church is free.
