It is mentioned as far back as the 16th century, making it considered the oldest surviving café in the city. The names of the owners are known from archival records from the last quarter of the 15th century. In 1515, the owner is first mentioned as a tavernier (i.e. innkeeper). The house name Vlissinghe appears in the documents from 1579.
