The Pforzheim cogeneration plant in the east of Pforzheim generates electricity and district heating mainly in combined heat and power. It is operated by the Heizkraftwerk Pforzheim GmbH. With 270 million kilowatt hours per year, the power plant has the largest share of the Pforzheim electricity supply. Its electrical output is 102.6 MW, its thermal output is 212 MW gross. The heating plant was put into operation in 1964 and expanded in several stages of construction to its present state. It was last modernized in 2004 by the Swiss Colenco Power Engineering AG.It consists of four blocks: The oldest facility of 1965 serves only as a reserve.
The Kombiblock from 1980 consists of a gas turbine whose waste heat is used in a steam turbine on. The electrical power is 42MW.
The fluidized bed block of 1990 generates 30MW of electric power from hard coal. Since 2009, substitute fuels from waste have also been used.
The biomass block from 2005 generates 13MW of electricity and 25MW of heat. He is fired with waste wood. The two fireplaces are 100 meters high.Source: pfenz.de/wiki/Heizkraftwerk_Pforzheim
