Jacob van Brucele, abbot of St. Bavo's Abbey in Ghent, rests in a place of honor in the church in a mausoleum dating from about 1465.
Every year, the people of Ghent, starting from St. Bavo's Abbey, traveled en masse with the relics of their city patron, St. Livinus, to his grave in Sint-Lievens-Houtem. A strange history! This noisy pilgrimage often got completely out of hand, so that in 1540, when Emperor Charles was severely punished in his native city, it was stopped!

This house of God is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword or lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.
