Bike Touring Highlight
At the gates of the town of Volkach lies the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten amidst the vineyards. The church was first documented in 1245 as a church on the "Altenberg bei Volkach". A crossroads with stations from the 19th century leads upwards.
A special treasure of the church is the Rosary Madonna by Tilman Riemenschneider in the choir, which the artist created between 1521 and 1524. The Madonna was the last great work of Riemenschneider, who took part in the German Peasants' War on behalf of the Würzburg citizens for the rebellious peasants - and thus against the ecclesiastical authorities.

This idyllic pilgrimage church emerged from the oldest church in Volkach and stands on a small hill, the Volkacher Kirchberg, above the Mainschleife amidst vineyards. It is the oldest parish of the Mainschleife at all. The art historical highlight of the late Gothic church is the Rosary Madonna. It is the last image of Mary by Tilmann Riemenschneider before his hands were crushed due to his involvement in the peasant revolts. From him Oskar Kokoschka said: The Madonna "is one of the spiritual documents of humanity that must be preserved." This gem came in 1962 by a sensational robbery in the headlines. The thieves had to realize, however, that a work of art of this importance is not for sale. They extorted ransom, which was raised by the magazine Stern (100,000 DM). Meanwhile, the artwork is electronically secured.
