Tips

The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal was opened in 1827 and, initially, the plan was to link the Bristol Channel to the English Channel by canals. While this never came to full fruition, it was then built to help link Taunton to Bristol. The canal has never been out of use and even though commercial canal traffic ended in the early 1900s, it was still used to transport potable water (and still is). Today, it’s also a lovely place for a stroll and the towpath is very pretty, particularly in summer.
