Birthplace of Wilhelm Schickard. He was the nephew of the builder Heinrich Schickhardt. At first he embarked on a spiritual career, but was then appointed by the Duke as a professor of Hebrew at the University of Tübingen. Later he also taught astronomy there.Wilhelm Schickard was a versatile and talented man: he was active as a cartographer and painter, studied numerous oriental languages and was in correspondence with many famous scholars in various fields, e.g. with the astronomer Johannes Kepler. The invention of the first mechanical calculating machine in 1623 is considered his greatest achievement today. Wilhelm Schickard died of the plague in Tübingen in 1635.
