Finally a real market place, today I noticed for the first time what a great added value it is when you don't have to pay attention to rail traffic all the time.

From 1722 to 1807, the Konkordienkirche stood at the current location of the pyramid, in whose crypt the remains of the city's founder, Margrave Karl Wilhelm, found their final resting place. After the church was demolished, a wooden pyramid was first created over the crypt and various designs were obtained over the years for the future appearance of the tomb. Like many other buildings in Karlsruhe and also on the market square, the pyramid was then designed according to a design by Friedrich Weinbrenner. The market square was redesigned as part of the construction of the subway. The pyramid was not moved for this purpose, but rather well protected as a landmark of Karlsruhe.
At the end of 2020, the construction work is almost complete. A new fountain was also created between the pyramid and Kaiserstraße.

The pyramid has a height of 6.81 meters, its side edges are 8.04 meters long and the base edges of the square base are 6.05 meters long. It is therefore significantly flatter than the model, the Cestius pyramid. Inside, it is divided into three chambers one above the other. The top chamber is open to the outside via ventilation shafts. The middle chamber can be entered via an entrance from the outside. The limestone tablet with an engraved city map of Karlsruhe was in the middle until 1998 and has been again since 2018 on a sandstone base. It was in the collection of the City Museum for restoration purposes and for protection during the construction of the subway. The lowest, inaccessible, chamber is the crypt in which the sarcophagus of Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach lies.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlsruher_Pyramide
