Here the Erft "accelerates" again and flows quickly into the Rhine, where its water disappears after just a few meters in the water of the Rhine. When paddling in winter you can clearly feel the drop in temperature at the transition from Erft to the Rhine water.

After about 110 kilometers the Erft joins the Rhine near Neuss

After 106.6 km the Erft flows into the Rhine at Grimlinghausen in a very unspectacular and sensational way. The Erft rises in the Ahr Mountains in the Euskirchen district at an altitude of 527 m above sea level. NN and empties at 31 m above sea level. NN, that's about 500 m altitude difference and three district towns that the Erft has to overcome on its way to the mouth. The river on its way is densely overgrown and provides a habitat for many animals and birds. The vegetation is lush and diverse. People enjoy paddling and fishing. Many works of art are displayed on the paths along the river. Over the years, the earth was degraded and later renatured again in order to avoid flooding.
Man has learned a lot from the river and is now trying to adapt to it.

"... The Erft has its source near Nettersheim in the Eifel, flows on the left side of the Rhine, is almost 105 kilometers long and flows into the Rhine at Neuss.
In fact, the Erft changed its course several times over the course of time, partly also by human hands. Among other things, the advance of lignite mining required the river to be relocated several times: Today the mouth of the Erft is in Neuss-Grimlinghausen, right next to the sports harbor there.
The place at the mouth of the Erft is very popular with anglers. In addition to cyclists, there are strollers who stop in the bars on the banks of the Rhine and enjoy the view of the Kardinal-Frings-Brücke, the Düsseldorf TV tower and the beautiful panorama of the North Rhine-Westphalian capital. ... The mouth of the Erft appears different in every season of the year. This time I experience it after the flood, which is why everything looks very brown.

There are currently a lot of nettles - a detour here is still a must!

The estuary here was relocated here in the Middle Ages during a war in order to drain the Neuss ditches, but from the point of view of the besiegers that did not work either. Before that, the Erft flowed into Neuss city center at today's harbor at the cinema!
