Bike Touring Highlight
The city fascinates for its very happy position, the mildness of the climate and the beauty of the places. There are many testimonies of the culture of the conquerors: from the Romans to the Byzantines, from the Arabs to the Normans, from the Swabians to the French, from the Spaniards to the Austrians, they have left the unmistakable trace of their stay.
Almost always these are testimonies of extraordinary value, as the confluence of forms and styles, from Northern Europe to Africa, from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, has often given rise to extremely colorful artistic, architectural and decorative creations.
And this is the other peculiarity of Palermo: that, despite the mixture of cultures, the city has preserved the identity of the capital city, which in all times has been able to combine the best of other people with its own vocation for freedom.
Via Maqueda and Via Vittorio Emanuele. This point, the center of the city, is called the Quattro Canti because of the four rounded corners of the buildings that overlook it, decorated with fountains and statues.
A stone's throw from Via Maqueda is Piazza Pretoria, with the solemn Palazzo del Municipio, the Church of Santa Caterina and the monumental Praetorian Fountain. After passing through the nearby Piazza Bellini, the Martorana Church appears. Adjacent to this church is the 12th century Church of San Cataldo. It is dominated by three red domes reminiscent of Arab architecture. The interior is very impressive. Both these churches constitute one of the most beautiful visions of Palermo.
