Stupas are a symbol of the perfect nature of the mind, compassion and wisdom. The stupa is a building in which Buddhist relics are kept in valuable containers. Relics are remnants of a saint or an important person in a religion. In the past, stupas contained the ashes of the Buddha or another saint. Today, other sacred mementos of the Buddha or texts from sacred scriptures are often kept in stupas.A stupa is often a humble little structure or sanctuary in the shape of a hemisphere with no windows or doors. Usually it has a point that points to the sky - to nirvana. The structure of a stupa represents the important symbols of Buddhism. The round or square base stands for belief in the Buddha and the wheel of teaching. The three disks above are a symbol of the threefold taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. The four noble truths and the noble eightfold path can also be discovered in a stupa.
