In the section of the wall up to the Martinskirche, the Cologne gate tower secured the road that led from Oberwesel to the north. At that time, this important trade route from Mainz to Cologne had to be led over the heights between Oberwesel and St. Goar because the steep cliffs on the banks made it impossible to build a road along the Rhine. It takes its name from the destination Cologne, because the old Roman road, which once connected the legionary camps Mainz and Cologne, ran through this gate. After the city was expanded around 1350, the Koblenz gate tower took on the same function that the Cologne gate tower had previously.
