In close proximity to the transit camp for prisoners of war from the Soviet Union, the main camp Stalag 326 VI K, a burial ground with mass graves was created at the time of the Second World War.Immediately after the liberation, the survivors endeavored to transform this cemetery into a place of remembrance. Today it has become the Soviet cemetery of honor. On May 7, 1945, a group of former prisoners began construction work on a 10-meter high obelisk, which was to serve as a memorial. They were also supported by German residents. The survivors erected gravestones and planted trees, so that today the Soviet cemetery has a park-like character and is a real place of reflection.Source: City Castle Holte - Stukenbrock
