Mountain Biking Highlight
The Itzenplitzer Weiher is located in the Heiligenwald district of the municipality of Schiffweiler and is an approx. 50 x 500 m large body of water, which was created in connection with the construction of a locomotive branch line between the Reden and Itzenplitz pits. The construction of this route required the embankment of a dam, with which the Kallenbach and Klinkenbach in the Rußhüttertal were dammed in the years 1878 and 1879. The first pumping station was built at the same time. The historic pump house still preserved today was finally built in 1908.Today the area around the pond is used as a local recreation area. It is approx. 7 km² and has a network of paths for hikers of approx. 53 km. Runners, Nordic walkers and anglers also often use the local recreation area. The site is looked after by the local recreation area Itzenplitz ", in which the municipalities of Merchweiler, the city of Friedrichsthal and the municipality of Schiffweiler have come together.Access to the local recreation area and the pond is free.
