At 9.85 km in length, it is the longest of the four transfer tunnels within the framework of the overall concept of "Fernwasserversorgung Nordthüringen", which includes a dam network from the Ohra, Schmalwasser and Tambach-Dietharz dams with the necessary transfer tunnels (further transfer tunnels are the 5.67 km long Haselbachstollen, the 1.85 km long Schmalwasserstollen and the 1.1 km long Mittelwasserstollen). It serves as a free fall transfer to the connection of the 34.7 km ² large catchment area of the Zahmen Gera, the wild Gera, the Kehltalbach, the Sieglitzbach and the long reason to the Ohratalsperre (Wikipedia).
