On May 6, 1287, the castle in Plau was inaugurated by Knight Johann Kloß.
He was also appointed as bailiff. In 1448/49, the castle bailiff Lüdeke Hahn was commissioned at Basedow Castle to expand the castle into a fortress. The castle tower and the walls (remains) date from this period. The purpose of the expansion was to put a stop to the robber barons in Brandenburg.
From 1508 to 1552, the castle cellar was used as a wine cellar.
When Duke Henry V, the Peaceful, died in 1552, wine growing stopped again.
From 1538 to 1550, the Plau Castle was expanded into the largest fortress in northern Germany. The castle and the city surrounded by walls had to endure 8 major sieges and lootings from 1618 to 1648.
In 1630, a plague epidemic killed many residents.
The imperial troops finally left the city in 1651.
From 1660 onwards, the fortress was demolished, only the tower, rampart and some remains of the wall remained standing.
In the middle of 1920, the dilapidated battlements were replaced by the original conical roof.
For the 750th anniversary of the confirmation of the city charter in 1985, some committed citizens set up a local history museum in the castle tower.
After 1990, citizens of the local history association worked on expanding the museum.
In 2004, the city library moved into the main building.
For several years, the castle cellar has been opened for Christmas Street.

Impressive, even if only very little is preserved. The museum is certainly interesting, unfortunately only open from Easter to October.

A visit to the museum is definitely worth it! Very lovingly assembled collection. Family friendly prices. Nice leadership.

The historic castle tower in Plau am See is the remaining part of a fortification that was built in 1449 to stop the raids of the Brandenburg knights. During the Thirty Years' War, it offered protection against sieges and income from the Swedes and Saxons.
At the end of the war, it was decided to grind down the weir system, which meant dismantling it. Only the castle tower was spared from this fate.
The tower was not used until 1985 and was open to everyone, which made the children of Plau particularly happy, who had great adventures.
The Museumsfreunde Plau am See also made it their task in 2000 to renovate the tower and make it attractive for visitors.
Today the tower is a popular tourist destination in the region. With an intact clock tower from 1581 and a dungeon 11 meters deep, it offers an experience worth seeing.
