On the Darß was one of the most famous primeval forests of the German Reich. However, it is not to be regarded as a primeval forest, since it has been used for forestry since the Middle Ages with different intensity. Only since the founding of the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, according to the national park motto "let nature be natural", the forestry use has ended, at least in the core zone in the northwest of the Darßwald. However, traces of forest use are still clearly visible in the Darß Forest, which is one of the largest contiguous forests in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Darßwald was formerly a pasture forest. From this time, the numerous, sometimes far apart and whimsical Weidbuchen remained. Especially by the Danish and French occupiers was exploited in the Darßwald depletion. For example, during the short Danish period, all the old yews fell victim. They served for interior paneling of the castles Rosenborg and Amalienborg. It is today a fantastic forest area for hiking and cyclingSource:
