The national park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft" has been created by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) "at the last minute" before reunification in 1990.

Primeval forests are one of the most original forms of nature. They are forests that have thrived for centuries without human influence and because of their wild and romantic naturalness very charming. On 4700 hectares, you will find gnarly and coastal wind shaped trees, wildflowers, swamp and abundant livestock. The forest is criss-crossed by cycling and hiking trails.

A wonderful, natural forest, where you can get fresh air in rough amounts. And you should treat yourself to the trip to the lighthouse of Prerow! Gorgeous overview of the Darß!

On the Darß was one of the most famous primeval forests of the German Reich. However, it is not to be regarded as a primeval forest, since it has been used for forestry since the Middle Ages with different intensity. Only since the founding of the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, according to the national park motto "let nature be natural", the forestry use has ended, at least in the core zone in the northwest of the Darßwald. However, traces of forest use are still clearly visible in the Darß Forest, which is one of the largest contiguous forests in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Darßwald was formerly a pasture forest. From this time, the numerous, sometimes far apart and whimsical Weidbuchen remained. Especially by the Danish and French occupiers was exploited in the Darßwald depletion. For example, during the short Danish period, all the old yews fell victim. They served for interior paneling of the castles Rosenborg and Amalienborg. It is today a fantastic forest area for hiking and cyclingSource:

The Darßer jungle north of Ahrenshoop is an experience. The steep coast, the forest, the wild stands and the Darßer place.

The Darßwald is a forest area on the western part of the Darß peninsula. There are no settlements in the forest area. Surrounding places are Ahrenshoop and Born in the south and Wieck and Prerow in the east.

The name of this highlight creates confusion. Ahrenshoop is a location that is approx. 7 km south-south-west of this highlight.

The path from the junction k-Weg-Leuchtturmweg towards the lighthouse is now better accessible for cyclists because here the old concrete sleepers were replaced by an asphalt pavement. But the Leuchtturmweg in the direction of Prerow is now closed to cyclists. The cyclist must now drive the way in the direction of Nothafen / campground. This section has also been renewed.
