Greetsiel: Halbinsel Leyhörn

The Leyhörn is a protected peninsula in the south of Leybucht in the Lower Saxon municipality Krummhörn in the district of Aurich. The artificial headland was created until 1991 in the course of coastal protection measures.

Plans for coastal protection from the 1960s originally envisaged a complete calibration of the Leybucht, in which the dike line was to be shortened from 16.5 to around eight kilometers. Demands of nature conservation, drainage and the place Greetsiel, however, led to a change in the plans. In September 1985, the plan application was approved for the maintenance of a largest possible open bay and the construction of an estuary with Siel as close as possible to the deep groove of the Norderley.

In October 1985, the implementation of the construction work began. In 1991, the artificial headland Leyhörn was completed. Simultaneously, the barrage Leysiel with lock was manufactured until September 1991 and put into operation. The new Siel is therefore in front of the two old slats in Greetsiel, which receive the Old and New Greetsieler Sieltief.

Part of the Leyhörn peninsula was declared a nature reserve Leyhörn in December 1994.

The Leysiel is a combined barrage and Siel with lock northwest of Greetsiel in the municipality Krummhörn (Ostfriesland). It was completed in 1991. [1] The coastal protection structure is intended to fulfill three different functions: on the one hand enable a tide-free access to the fishing village of Greetsiel, on the other hand to ensure the drainage of the low-lying, inland areas and secure third serve for nature conservation. The 200-hectare Leyhörn reservoir, including the eastern dyke, has been under Natuschutz protection and will primarily serve nature conservation purposes.
