Today's Krefeld district of Hüls (...) was an independent municipality that was incorporated into the former district town of Kempen in 1970 and into Krefeld in 1975. The core location is based on the glory belonging to the knightly family of Hüls (...), which emerged from their own property - first documented as a ministeriale in 1112. (...)
At the beginning the family lived in an “old” castle in Hülser Bruch, which was replaced in 1455 by a new building closer to town. The glory was a subordination of the archbishopric (elector) of Cologne, to which the Hülser knights (...) were obliged to serve and take up arms.
A special feature is the northern part of the district, the Hülsisch-Moersische Straße, which came to the County of Moers around 1410 as part of an inheritance division in 1363 - and subsequently to Orange and Prussia; Its residents were therefore subject to Moersian, later Orange, jurisdiction until the French era - unlike the core town of Electoral Cologne. The abolition of sovereign aristocratic rights by the French in 1806 and the merger of the Hülsisch-Kölnischen district with the Moersisch-Oran district meant the end of the glory and the emergence of the community of Hüls.
