"Friedrichstrasse station as a border crossing
During the division of Berlin, Friedrichstrasse station, which opened in 1882, played a sad role. Today an exhibition in the glass pavilion called the Tear Palace reminds us that the busy traffic junction was a border crossing between the GDR and West Berlin between 1963 and 1990. Anyone who knows the place from earlier knows it as a place of trepidation. The feeling of being watched by security officers without facial expressions in the border box. The GDR security forces everywhere. Everything disappeared today. For those who know these feelings from the past, it is a wonderful experience to visit this place today. Looking away from the neighboring Palace of the Tears, in everyday life almost nothing can be seen from earlier.

Friedrichstrasse station was the border crossing point to West Berlin during GDR times. From here, S-Bahn, U-Bahn or long-distance trains from the GDR to West Berlin. The former exit hall of this border crossing point was popularly known as the "Tränenpalast" (Palace of Tears) in Berlin because of the tears shed here when the visit to the West was said.
