After Italy declared war on Austria on May 23, 1915, the area around the Three Peaks turned into a gloomy theater of war. The front line between Paternkofel – Paternsattel – Drei Zinnen – Forcella Col di Mezzo corresponded to the state border at that time and until 1918 became a hard-fought mountain front, where Austrian Kaiserjäger and Italian Alpini faced each other. In the course of the war, a searchlight was even brought to the great pinnacle by the Italian army at great expense to illuminate the Austrian positions. Many testimonies such as tunnels or positions of this theater of war are still preserved today and can also be visited in some places. They are witnesses of a time in which even the Dolomites, which have meanwhile been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were not spared from suffering and destruction by human hands and give visitors impressive insights into the First World War.
