Mighty mountains surround the basin of Sand in Taufers and yet the castle Taufers forms an impressive backdrop. Its architectural history clearly shows that it is an important dynasty castle of the Middle Ages.Taufers Castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century on a promontory that separates the Tauferer from the Ahrntal. The main castle against the mountain of Ahornach in the north (attack side) consists of keep and built residential tower, another Palas (later granary) is located in a sheltered place in the west. The building site, which is defined by the natural terrain, is delimited by an encircling curtain wall on which various residential buildings, mostly developed in the early 16th century, lean against.
