Bike Touring Highlight
Schleswig-Holstein is not richly decorated with great technical monuments. But its bridges and canals are known far beyond the country's borders. And a special traffic junction can be admired in Rendsburg. The crossing of three traffic routes is unique in the world: railways, waterways and the road through the Schwebefähre. The landmark Rendsburg, the high bridge, has become a magnet for the whole region and is still one of the most important technical monuments in Germany.

The Rendsburger Hochbrücke with the Schwebefähre is the landmark of Rendsburg. Its construction owes the high bridge between Rendsburg and Österrönfeld to the military: the construction of the Kiel Canal since 1887 was intended to increase the maneuverability of the German navy between the North and Baltic Seas. Since the initially realized swing bridges allowed only one type of traffic, it was decided during the canal extension 1907-1914 to build a 2,486 m long iron structure with two, together about 4,500 m long earth dams, which travels on trains with the usual low slope and at the same time of ships could be happened. Completed shortly before the First World War as the largest building of the empire, since then dominated the civilian use as a crossroads of three roads: a waterway, a railway line and a highway, which is connected by the attached transporter. The transporter bridge is currently defective and will probably not be ready for a long time.

Below the bridge on the north side of the canal, all ships are greeted with a national anthem (so-called ship greetings). In total there are 220 national anthems available and are based on the country of origin of the ship!
The transporter bridge of the Rendsburg Bridge is currently (2017) broken and a repair will take several months.
