The present districts of the city of Brandenburg on the Havel, the old town and the new town were, although their foundations are only 26 years apart, long two independent cities. The Old Town of Brandenburg was first mentioned in 1170 and the New Town of Brandenburg for the first time in 1196. For many centuries, however, separated only by the Havel, both cities acted completely independently. Only the Schöppenstuhl in the middle of the Havel you shared.
Only in 1715 was the "compulsory association" of the Old City of Brandenburg and the New City of Brandenburg by the soldier king Friedrich Wilhelm I to the "United Chur and capital of Brandenburg".
Its expression finds this today u.a. also in the city coat of arms of the city Brandenburg at the Havel.

The Old Town Hall is considered an outstanding example of Gothic brick architecture.
In the middle of the 15th century, the council and writing offices were first created. Later, between 1470 and 1480, the main building with the tower was built. Until the unification of the two Brandenburg cities in 1715, the town hall was the administrative center of the old town.
