The Old Town Hall is considered an outstanding example of Gothic brick architecture.
In the middle of the 15th century, the council and writing rooms were first created. Later, between 1470 and 1480, the main building with the tower was built. Until the unification of the two Brandenburg cities in 1715, the town hall was the administrative center of the old town.

The current districts of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel, the old town and the new town, were two independent cities for a long time, although their foundations are only 26 years apart. The old city of Brandenburg was first mentioned in 1170 and the new city of Brandenburg for the first time in 1196. For many centuries, however, only separated by the Havel, both cities operated completely independently. You only shared the Schöppenstuhl in the middle of the Havel.
It was only in 1715 that the "Soldierkönig" of the Old City of Brandenburg and the New City of Brandenburg was carried out by the soldier king Friedrich Wilhelm I to the "United Chur and Brandenburg capital".
This finds expression today among other things. also in the coat of arms of the city of Brandenburg on the Havel.
