The "Killetje" tidal culvert is part of the eponymous tidal lock that regulates the drainage and supply of water to the Waterdunen. This lock limits the tidal range, which is approximately 3.8 meters on the seaward side, to 1.1 meters on the Waterdunen side, preventing the area from being completely emptied at low tide and flooding at high tide. This tidal lock made it possible to create the Waterdunen nature reserve, a salt marsh area home to various bird species.
