Before Antonio Vivaldi became a famous composer, he was ordained a priest. He also had fiery red hair, which is much rarer in Italy than here. Maybe that's why Vivaldi sometimes hid his hair under a wig.

Vivaldi only worked as a priest for a year. Then he became a violin teacher at a Venetian orphanage for girls, the Ospedale della Pietà. He has played the violin since childhood, and quite well. Vivaldi now saw it as his job to pass this skill on to the girls in the orphanage. The children there were by no means all orphans, but in Venice at that time many daughters were simply abandoned because the families could not or would not afford to raise the girls and their dowry when they later married. Under Vivaldi's care, the children in the orphanage developed into excellent little musicians who soon became famous beyond the borders of Venice.
