The fortress Hohensalzburg is the landmark of Salzburg. It is located on a city hill above the city of Salzburg, the fortress mountain, which continues northwest into the Mönchsberg. The foothills in the east of the fortress hill is called Nonnberg, on which directly below the eastern grounds of the fortress - the Nonnbergbasteien - the Benedictine nun Nonnberg is located. Fortress Hohensalzburg is one of the largest castles in Europe with over 7,000 m² of built-up area (including the bastions over 14,000 m²).
