The Griesheim dam was built between 1929 and 1932 in the cubic forms of the Bauhaus style, it was inaugurated in September 1932. From the beginning she was equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the time. If required, an electric lighting system enabled night-time operation; all lock gates were given an electric drive. The power plant built into the barrage supplied approx. 25 megawatt hours of electricity a year, which was fed into the Frankfurt grid. On Schwanheimer side also a dwelling house for the sluice officials developed. In the last days of the war 1945 the barrage was blown up by pioneers of the Wehrmacht and completely rebuilt in the years 1949/50. In the years 1967, 1984 and 2006 were carried out beyond the regular maintenance beyond renovation and repair work on the barrage.
