The free-standing watchtower was built in the middle of the 15th century. The windows and doorway are Gothic-style, while the dome is Renaissance-style. A striking point is the tower clock.

The Galgtor, which was demolished in 1819, stood next to the Leipzig tower.From here a path (today the upper Leipziger Strasse) led to the Galgberg at today's Riebeckplatz, from around 1100 the place of execution in Halle.
