The Betteleiche is an estimated 600 to 800 years old pedunculate oak in the Hainich at the crossroads of the Rennstieg with the high road. The oak, which is protected as a natural monument, is one of the oldest and most striking trees of the Hainich and is a well-known landmark of the Hainich National Park. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

According to a legend, beggar monks received gifts from kind people at the foot of the oak. In order to protect the gifts from bad weather, the monks made a box-shaped bulge in the trunk, which took on its present shape over the centuries due to weathering and growth.
