The fact that King Johann's monument is still standing here is due to his interest in Dante. Without this artistic reference, it would be quite possible that Ross and Reiter would have ended up in the non-ferrous metal collection. King Johann became king in 1854 when his brother Friedrich August died in a tragic traffic accident with his horse-drawn carriage. The monarch had been formed up to that point and thus also wrote the translation of Dante's divine comedy into German that is still valid today. There is therefore a book with Dante's portrait on the back. What he did not succeed in implementing after the German-French war was the Greater German solution he advocated. So a state that included Austria. In 1878, after the opening of the new Semper Opera, it was decided to erect a monument here. It was inaugurated in 1889 and has been the center of the square ever since.

The monument created in 1889 by the sculptor Johannes Schilling commemorates King John of Saxony (1801-1873), who among other things commissioned the construction of the Semper Opera House. Posterity knows him primarily as an admirer and translator of Dante's “Divine Comedy” under the pseudonym Philaletes. Saxony owes him reforms in education and jurisdiction. In the struggle for state unity, the learned ruler was highly valued by his fellow princes as a “lawyer among kings and king among lawyers”.dnn.de/Nachrichten/Kultur/Regional/Wellness-fuer-Koenig-Johann-Reiterstandbild-vor-Dresdner-Semperoper-verhuellt

The King Johann Monument is a bronze, six meter (with its richly designed base 13.50 meter) high equestrian statue of the Saxon King Johann on the Dresden Theaterplatz, which was created by Johannes Schilling from 1882 and unveiled in 1889. In the baroque tradition it stands as a point de vue at the intersection of the central axes of the Semperoper and Sempergalerie.

@Bjoern: A book with Dante's portrait? I overlooked that in the flood of sights, i.e. I will visit Dresden a few more times. Thank you for your hint.
