This was the only bridge in Florence that was not blown up by the retreating Germans in 1944, during the Second World War.
Why? According to a rumor, Hitler who on the occasion of his journey in Italy in 1938, had visited Ponte Vecchio, appreciated it very much and perhaps this could have contributed to the salvation of the bridge. According to others, two workers of goldsmith shops would have noticed previously, the point of the connections for explosives and secretly have defused the bomb that undermined the bridge. But surely it was providential the intervention of Gerhard Wolf, the German representative in Florence, who after the war obtained an honorary citizenship of Florence for this and other merits.

Originally, several butchers, fishmongers and tanners had set their workshops on Ponte Vecchio; but, to avoid unpleasant smells at the passage of the Grand Duke in the Vasarian Corridor, they were transferred and later replaced by the shops of goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers, that still occupy the bridge.
