Bike Touring Highlight
Eisenheim - the name already says why the first workers' settlement in the Ruhr area was built here in 1846. Eisenheim was not built in one go. 51 houses were built in several construction phases. Miners have also moved in since the 1890s. Around 1,200 people lived here at the turn of the century.
The settlement began to decline after World War II. The destroyed houses were only half-heartedly rebuilt. Seven Masters' Houses - the oldest buildings in the settlement - have been replaced by new multi-storey buildings. In the early 1970s, the settlement was supposed to be demolished. It is thanks to the imaginative, legendary struggle of the residents that Eisenheim was renovated and the remaining 38 houses were declared a monument.
