Aprath Castle is an abandoned aristocratic seat in the Aprath district of Wülfrath near the border with the Wuppertal city area. The ensemble of buildings known as Aprath Castle goes back to the core of the modern castle building, which was built in 1722 by Baron Johann Abraham Friedrich von Syberg zu Aprath near the medieval Aprath Castle, a protective and defensive system that has been inhabited by the local nobles since the High Middle Ages . In the course of time, the buildings were rebuilt and expanded several times. The appearance after the renovation by Carl Rumpff in the 19th century shaped the memory of the property. Today the entire castle complex has disappeared. Only remnants of the medieval fortifications, which are located directly on Landesstrasse 74 and are sometimes called Aprath Castle, have survived.
In the immediate vicinity of the property are the Aprath mill and the Kaiser Wilhelm monument on a hill.

What would it mean for Wülfrath, for tourism and cultural life if this building still existed? Because Aprath Castle was originally a knight's and gentleman's seat - at the beginning of the 20th century, however, it was primarily used as a public place and recreational area for the citizens. But the imposing castle was not treated with care in the end. It fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 1980s. Only individual elements are reminiscent of the old knight's seat.

It would have been worthy of monument and protection. The knight's seat, on the site of which the castle was later built, was first mentioned in 1150. He changed hands several times over the years. The castle building itself - with its protective and defensive systems - was built in 1722 by Baron Johann Abraham Friedrich von Syberg zu Aprath. The building that he had built, however, was not completely new. Individual elements, for example the west tower, the cellar and the south and west walls of the main house, were probably retained - as was the room layout.

In 1974 the eastern parts of the palace were finally demolished, the rest about ten years later. Today, only part of the medieval fortification remains of the manor house - it was renovated in the 1990s and could therefore survive for a few more years and remind of the place where knights and lords and later also the citizens of Wülfrath came together.
