The beach image of SPO is characterized by the up to 7 m high stilt houses, which have long become the symbol of the place. For more than 100 years, the wooden huts on stilts, made of larch wood, have contributed significantly to the design of the beach image of St. Peter-Ording. Every beach in Ording, Bad, Dorf and Böhl has stilt houses close to the coast. In 1911, the first pile dwelling, the "Giftbude", opened its doors in SPO. The name indicates, in typical North German fashion, that it was here after the jump into the cool wet "wat geev", because the main task of the wooden buildings was already then to comply with the well-being of the beach visitors. In order to provide the water rats more comfort and safety on the beach, additional pile dwellings for the bathing supervision and changing rooms were built. Today there are five pile diner restaurants on the long beach of SPO, which prepare one or the other delicacies for guests and locals. Here you can eat delicious with the best views of the North Sea and enjoy the sun on good weather conditions on the terraces. The stilt houses were also awarded the label "Simple Cultural Property".
