The castle ruin Poppberg is well hidden behind the village of the same name on a relatively inconspicuous hill. However, at 652 m above sea level, the hill is the highest elevation in the Franconian Alb. The first secure mention dates back to 1373, when the so-called New Bohemian country of the Emperor Charles IV passed into the hands of the Bavarian duke.
You can see a narrow tower on a pointed rock formation, the highest point of the Burguine. The upper part of the tower is occupied by a recently built-up and concrete shelter, which served as an air observation post during the Second World War. A ring wall adjoins the rock formation, which extends around the entire area as a clearly visible terrain edge. The most impressive part of Poppberg is the residential building, a typical late medieval mixture of residential tower and palas from the period after 1300.
