The name Haus Demmin refers to the ruins of a Pomeranian princely castle (moated castle) and a manor house southeast of the Hanseatic city of Demmin on an island at the confluence of the Tollense and the Peene. The castle ruins are the oldest preserved secular building in Pomerania and are considered the "cradle" of this region.

The West Pomeranian dukes resided on the "Haus Demmin" castle complex (12th / 13th century). The castle was first mentioned in 1127. In 1128 the Pomeranian Duke Wartislaw I and Bishop Otto von Bamberg met on his second missionary trip.

Around 1850 another "Haus Demmin" - a mansion in the late classicist style - was built for the Vorwerker squire von Podewils. Hans-Joachim von Rohr's family later used it as a mansion until 1945. In GDR times, after expropriation, it was a boarding school for the extended secondary school.

After the city transferred the property back to the von Rohr family in 1991, it was temporarily exposed to vandalism despite investment efforts.
In 1997 "Haus Demmin" burned down to the outer walls. In 2004 the von Rohr family transferred it back to the Hanseatic city after securing the ruins and building a new bridge over the Tollense to the property.
