Mountain Biking Highlight
Too bad, of course, the first 4 photos of Matthias have nothing to do with the little cloud house. 🙈The Wolkenhäuschen is a building on the top of the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. It was the first known development of the highest Harz summit and is still preserved despite the mountain's eventful history. The listed building was erected in 1736 at the instigation of Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. The construction cost was 17 thalers. The cloud house, which is more of a covered shelter, was intended to provide hikers on the Brocken with accommodation. The building was built of stones on a square floor plan and was given a small wooden pointed roof. The cracks between the stones were stuffed with moss. There were some wooden benches inside the simple house. The name Wolkenhäuschen became established early on, after it was initially referred to as a small house on the Brocken. The new name was caused by the climatic conditions of the Brocken, which was shrouded in fog on 306 days a year. The house was initially on the Brocken summit and beyond it was the only building. The Brockenhotel followed in 1800 and was destroyed several times by fire and in 1945 by a bomb attack.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolkenhäuschen
