Stoodley Pike was built to commemorate the end of the Crimean war. It replaced an earlier monument which commemorated the defeat of napoleon and the surrender of Paris. Spookily that monument burned down after a lightning strike on the same day the Russian ambassador left London having failed to keep Britain from entering the Crimean war. There is a balcony reached by 39 steps inside the monument affording some spectacular views. The track off London Road is very well maintained while approaching from Blackstone edge includes some very rocky areas nearer to the Pike.
WARNING.. it can get very very very windy at the Pike sometimes dangerously so. If the weather forecast is bad in the Todmorden area best to give it a miss
