The Holteyer harbor in Essen district Überruhr-Holthausen was built in 1837/1838 as one of the first real ports on the Ruhr and decommissioned in 1880. He served the Ruhr shipping as a safe haven in bad weather, low or high water and ice. In addition, the coal ships, the so-called Ruhraaken, wintered in the harbor.
