A peaceful region to the northeast of Bristol, you’ll find most of the walks in South Gloucestershire are blissfully low-lying with patchwork fields, pockets of woodland, and historic farmhouses and manors. With gentle loop walks, long-distance footpaths and everything in between, you’re sure to find the perfect walk whether you’re bringing young children along or just a bag full of flapjack.
If you’re after a sea breeze, head west to find South Gloucestershire’s estuarine hikes. Explore trails alongside the River Severn to admire its mudflats and sandbanks and step back from the shore to find Oldbury’s Iron Age fort. For forest walks, explore the trails at Wickwar’s woods. If you want history, include Thornbury Castle on your itinerary: it was owned by Henry VIII. South Gloucestershire is fantastic for hikers thanks to its comprehensive network of footpaths taking you almost anywhere you could want to go. Largely rural, every walk will be accompanied by peace and quiet.
