Comfortably sandwiched between the two great lakes of Windermere and Consiton, walks near Esthwaite Water offer beautiful adventures in every direction. With the car-free, historic village of Hawkshead at the head of the lake, you can stroll cobbled lanes where William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter would’ve walked.
Esthwaite Water’s hikes take you east on bridleways up through larch and spruce forest to Claife Heights where you can admire the views and descend to Windermere. Trails criss-cross the woods and you can choose from any number of routes that suit your mood.
To the west of Esthwaite, hike up to the vast Furness Fells and on into the endless trails in Grizedale Forest. North west, find the Tom Gill waterfall for a particularly impressive objective. Day hikes are plentiful around Esthwaite or spend longer walking from village to village, enjoying the drama of this beloved landscape.
