Schloss Schwarzenau is a magnificent Renaissance castle located in the heart of the market town of Schwarzenau, in the picturesque Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. Standing at an elevation of 618 metres, this historic landmark, originally a 12th-century water fortress, was transformed into the elegant four-towered castle seen today between 1580 and 1592. Its strategic Schloss Schwarzenau castle location near the Czech Republic border and about 80 kilometers from Vienna makes it a significant cultural site in the region.

The Renaissance Schwarzenau Castle was first mentioned - as a castle at that time - in 1150. It was converted into today's castle in the 16th century. During the Second World War it was used as a refugee center and occupied by the Soviets. During these years, the once magnificent building was badly damaged. From 1991 the castle - again privately owned - underwent extensive renovations. Today the complex impresses with a park and pond as well as valuable decorated outbuildings such as a tavern and chapel. The latter is considered a popular wedding location.
