The Great Plön Lake is the largest, deepest and most island-rich lake in Schleswig-Holstein. Fed by the Schwentine and with an area of almost 30 square kilometers and a maximum depth of around 58 m, it is the tenth largest lake in Germany.

The lakeshore was used by hunters, gatherers and fishermen in the Middle Stone Age (ca. 10,000–4300 BC). From the Late Stone Age (ca. 4300–2300 BC), through the Bronze Age (ca. 2300–550 BC) to the Iron Age (ca. 550 BC–400 AD), farmers lived here more or less continuously.

From the 8th to the 12th century AD, the area around Lake Plön was a Slavic settlement area. This is still evidenced by Olsborg, an island south of Plön, which was provided with extensive fortifications. It is probably identical with the castrum Plune mentioned by the chroniclers Adam of Bremen and Helmold of Bosau, whose Slavic name Plune means "ice-free water", from which the current place name Plön is derived.[4] In 1139, the Holstein count Adolf II of Schauenburg destroyed the fortress and thus ended Slavic rule over the Plön area.
