The accessible and navigable "start" of the service route (down the valley) on the left is at the fireboat shed at the fire brigade's port base opposite the petroleum port, accessible via a small footpath to Deusener Strasse next to fire station 2b. From here you can drive on the service road on the left, except for a small dangling through the Königsheide industrial area near Mengede, until shortly before the Waltrop lock park, which is not possible on the right service route.
